Memorial Song: Cliff Rubin's
"Dad's Song (I Can See Him Smile)"
We all grieve in our own way.
There's no right or wrong to it. Only one brother and
myself stayed to watch dad die in the hospital. The
others didn't want to be there. My siblings wanted to
get together the next day. I needed to be alone and
write this song. It took about 4 hours to write. Once
I finished it, then I was ready to join my brothers
and sisters.
I actually got up and sang it at
the memorial the following day, 2 days after he had died.
I got through the song without breaking down, made it
back to my seat and cried like a baby.
It's been 3 years since his memorial. We used to talk
on the phone every Monday. Somtimes I'll still have
that conversation with him. Sometimes, I still cry when
I think about him. Mostly, I smile at the great memories
I've got and am very grateful for the time we had together.
Have you lost your dad, or know someone who has? This
may be the perfect memorial song for you.
Also, I've started a category in my blog for sharing
stories of lost ones. Please click here
Memorial to read what
others have shared and to share your own story.
